I was born in a small coal mining town in Brookwood, Alabama. My parents were teenagers. We lived with my paternal grandparents.
My grandfather, Reverend Elgin Victor Swann, was a Southern Baptist Pastor/Evangelist/Singer/Songwriter. His tremendous influence on my life both spiritually and musically, is something I still carry with me to this day. I’m told he put me on the platform when I was two years old and said “Sing Baby.” At that time I pointed my finger in the air, started prancing around, and sang “This little light of mine, I’m gonna it shine.” …..and I’ve been at it ever since.
My grandmother, Elsie Swann, taught me chords on the piano. It was while playing the piano I realized I had inherited the gift of writing songs from Grandaddy. I spent my childhood singing in churches, revivals, and all day singings. I was saved when I was eight years old and baptized in the river.
I married my husband, Pastor Dennis Avery when I was 18 years old. We have been in the ministry most of our married lives. This has afforded me the opportunity to sing in churches, tent revivals, conventions, and many countries throughout the world.
My songs are a combination of Country, Worship, and Rhythm and Blues. I write and sing from my heart and always to lift up Jesus. I recorded cassettes in the ’80s and CDs at various times, and I will soon be releasing a new album, recorded at Hilltop Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, “I Found Mercy.”
